About the United Way
United Way and the Boy Scouts
Does the Wiregrass United Way Support the Scouts?
Right now, there is some information in the media describing the relationship of United Way and the Boy Scouts of America. We want to take a moment and explain in detail what is happening right now, and reassure the Wiregrass Community that we, the Wiregrass United Way, fully support our local Boy Scout Troopes, and that donations given to the Wiregrass United Way go toward helping the Scouts turn boys into men.
There are 1400 local branches of the United Way, and each makes their own decisions about who to fund, how much to give, and when the funding is given. Out of this number, about fifty United Ways across the nation have decided to alter or stop the funding of their local Boy Scout Troupes. These United Ways, for the most part, exist in areas that do not share the traditional family values of the Wiregrass Area. As such, their local volunteers decided, based on what they THOUGHT their community wanted, to change the relationship between their local Scouts and the United Way.
Here at the Wiregrass United Way, we have funded the Scouts since very early in our history, and continue to provide funding for this necessary organization. We will continue to fund the Scouts as long as they continue to mold boys into productive young men.
Last February, we awarded our annual allocations to our member agencies, and the local Boy Scout Council received an allocation of over $93,000.00. This was an increase of $11,400 over the previous year's grant. Out of the 36 agencies we fund, the Scouts consistently place in the top 5-6 funded programs in the Wiregrass, due to the number of boys they serve, and the impact they have on these young people.
